Book Review: Carter Beats the Devil

The copy I read appears to have my boyfriend's face on the cover (no, really, it's a combination of two old photos of him!)

Lately I seem to be reading books based in the same time period, pre-1930s. This is due to my (borderline obsession) interest in the turn of the century, and particularly the 1920s. It seems like such a fascinating time for so many reasons, in many different aspects of society. From the feminism of flappers to the technological advances that made moving image possible.

Carter Beats the Devil is a wonderful example of this era of change. The book takes you back to a lost era of magic, when vast and elaborate stage illusions were all the rage, and before magicians became so stereotypically cheesy that all I can think of is Gob Bluth. A time when magic DID confound and amaze and technology followed suit.

Doing it wrong: Gob Bluth.

This was Gold's first novel, released in 2001, although I feel it has somewhat of an anachronistic writing style. I wouldn't be surprised if this were written in the 40s or 70s, it's almost irrelevant when it was written, that's how well it takes you back in time. The story itself is written like a caper, bordering on unbelievability as Carter cheats death again and again (and not just onstage), with a climactic finale.

The book must have taken a tremendous amount of research (indeed Gold explains this in the acknowledgements), as it is partly historical. The only issue is knowing when the history moves into fantasy, but there are a few nice little nuggets for those that can catch them (such as Carter meeting the Marx Brothers while they are performing on the vaudeville circuit as a sketch troupe called "Fun in Hi-Skule", which they had actually performed).

Another thing I have to say about this book is that the female characters, although mainly existing as love interests for the male protagonist, are not damsels in distress. The first of Carter's loves is exactly the opposite, known for beating up the male performers in the troupe if they try to get fresh. The second, without giving too much away, would probably have been written by a different author as weak prey. Although this character has suffered at the hands of men, she is a fighter (not necessarily physically), which is considered unladylike by her peers.

I'd definitely read more novels by Glenn David Gold, and upon further research it seems that he has only written one other novel, Sunnyside.... Which just so happens to be about Charlie Chaplin, so you can bet that's next on my reading list!

The Black Cat Cabaret and Vicky Butterfly

I thought I HAD posted this up here, but I must have forgotten!

I did a bit of photoshop work and finishing up on the recent Black Cat Cabaret (which, if you are in London, you should definitely go and see!) poster for Summer. The poster was illustrated by the fantastic Fyodor Pavlov.

I shot the bottom two images, of Sammy Dinneen and Vicky Butterfly, and liked the image of Vicky so much that I decided it would work well as a standalone image also. So I did something a little fancier with it...

This Month In Pictures

What I've been up to during the past month, via my instagram @swiczeniuk!

I'm currently on holiday in Cornwall, visiting my parents for a week! This area is quite sentimental to me, as I've been visiting since I was a baby, although I grew up in Essex.

Top Left - Walking over to St. Michael's Mount via the causeway.

Top Right - Beautiful Mousehole in the sun

Bottom Left - It's been SO hot here, it feels like a different country. Unfortunately I didn't really consider this when packing, so had to go shopping when I got here. This is about as summery as I get...

Bottom Right - I LOVE fish, and being by the sea there's loads of local fish and other produce that just tastes so amazing.

Top Left - My hair was getting SO long (I've just had a trim and some layers put in today)!

Top Right - Chilling out on Marazion beach. Unfortunately the sea is still way too cold.

Bottom Left - Trying out a Dietrich inspired look for The Burning Beat

Bottom Right - Another look for The Burning Beat!

Top Left - New flyers for The Burning Beat ready to get out on the streets of London!

Top Right - Shot some of the Playful Promises lingerie body shots (plain background product shots) for our upcoming seasons on Miss Miranda. Also known as Mizz Mizzle, fo shizzle. But seriously, I can't wait for this gold chain set.

Bottom Left & Right - I did some modelling for awesome knitwear designer Viktorija Rudenia, and photographer Maya Art. Viktorija contacted me because she loved my flapper/circus style, which would work well for her pieces. I loved trying something different to my usual style, and the results I've seen are awesome! I'll post those in a separate post.

Top Left & Right - Two looks for The Burning Beat, both wearing new wigs from Geisha Wigs! The Left is Starlet and the right is Merida, which are both amazing. I'll do a proper review at some point.

Bottom Left - Miranda asked me to shoot her badass new burlesque costume, including LIGHT UP CHILLIS. She made the whole outfit, including the headdress - beauty and brains <3

Bottom Right - Another look for The Burning Beat, trying slightly different makeup.

This Month In Pictures

What I've been up to during the past month, via my instagram @swiczeniuk!

Top Left - I finally got around to dragging myself out of bed on a Sunday, post The Burning Beat, to try to Wolf Roast (don't worry, it was beef) at House of Wolf. It's the same venue that we hold TBB, so it was a bit bizarre being there during the day, NOT WORKING. Crazy. The roast was one of the best I've EVER tasted.

Top Right - My look for the night before. Red glittery eyebrows! I also actually painted those red feathers gold.

Bottom Left - I took my boyfriend to go and see Fitzrovia Radio Hour at Crazy Coqs. Our ex-stage manager (and one of the people I'm very glad to have met through TBB), Jon, is one of the Fitzrovia founders/members, so it was great to finally see him in action. The gist of the show is a 1940's style radio show, done live in front of the audience, including the sound effects. It's hilarious and all the actors are so talented; it doesn't seem like an easy task!

I did originally pincurl my hair to fit the theme of the beautiful venue, but it fell out during a stressful day at work - at least I had this gorgeous vintage hat (bought for me by my boyfriend) to try to fix it.

Bottom Right - 2 weekends ago we had the pleasure of DJing at a lovely wedding in Dublin! The bride had originally seen us at TBB and booked us to perform for their party. We had a late flight the day after, so we did a bit of sight seeing/wandering around Dublin. Here's the Oscar Wilde statue!

Top Left - Almost directly next to our hotel (La Stampa, which was gorgeous) in Dublin was this absolutely STUNNING art nouveau cafe! Photos can't do it justice. I could just imagine throwing a lavish party there...

Top Right - What I looked like for DJing the wedding! Thought it best to go with glamorous 1920s rather than freakshow circus!

Bottom Left - I've been useless at blogging recently because I've shot and edited 2 lookbooks (and by friday, I'll be onto my third) and have generally been rushed off my feet. Here's Miranda and a kitty, post shoot for Playful Promises Lingerie SS14. We do like shooting in locations that come with animals.

Bottom Right - As I can't find a bookcase that I a) like and b) can afford, I spotted the idea of using apple crates as storage units! I've stacked three on top of eachother and I LOVE the way they look! Now I can display all my favourite books.

Top Left - Another snap from one of the lookbooks I shot. This time Playful Promises Swim SS14 with the jaw-dropping Mulan. I'll post up the results too!

Top Right - Visited the Fabulously Fetish HQ to test out my custom made boots! This is just an example of the shape, they are actually going to be red leather with that gorgeous fabric! SO EXCITED!

Bottom Left - Had the pleasure of going to see Woodkid again (I think I saw him the first time in late 2012?), this time in the Roundhouse. Epic doesn't cover it.

Bottom Right - Some lingerie blinging. This time with a What Katie Did girdle and... I think that's a Primark bra that I bought years and years ago and never wore. Unfortunately it's a cupsize too small, but damnit, I'll suffer for my art.

Alt-Mu Magazine Interview

Hurrah I'm finally a cover girl!

When I went to shoot with the awesome Scott Chalmers, he mentioned doing some shots for Alt-Mu Magazine, that could go along with an interview.

Well, the magazine is out, and not only do I have a 4 page interview, but Im also on the cover! Click on the link to read my blatherings about the different things I do. Also the rest of the magazine is a great read, and particulaly well designed (I'm a real stickler for well-designed magazines).

I don't think I've shared the other images from the shoot here yet... even if I have, I love them so much I'll share them again ;)

Facebook Creeps and Lingerie Models

The main part of my job is running social media for a lingerie brand (no surprise as to which one, although I'm keeping the name out of this article to avoid it being search-able), which, of course, includes a Facebook Page.

Now, people interact with Facebook Pages in certain, often completely bizarre, ways. There are those who "get" that they are currently interacting with a brand or a company in public, and that there is a possibility that their interaction will show up in their friends' timeline. Then there are those that seem to have varying degrees of understanding, ranging from kinda-understand to interactions that I can only assume are from someone completely devoid of social ability.

Most Page admins will have witnessed this at some point, either from someone posting a completely unrelated comment that seems to be personally directed at someone (I assume they have seen a notification that their friend has "liked" a status/post and assumed that it is a share) or some sort of spam. Or just the equivalent of someone that has wandered into a shop/restaurant/business and started shouting "WHAT IS THIS. WHAT IS THIS. WHAT IS THIS." at the top of their lungs.

But, you know, all of this is fairly tolerable, or completely insignificant. What I cannot tolerate are crude sexual comments. Either directed at me (well, their version of me - I can only assume that think there is a model sitting behind the computer in her underwear, completely stationary and awoken only when her knight in shining armour says the immortal words "Hey baby") or directed at the models in the images (some of which are my friends, which frustrates me even more. If the comment were made in a pub or club, I'd happily tell them where to shove it. Unfortunately that is considered bad business practice from someone representing a brand).

(We get about one of these messages a week; I've stopped responding)

This is my JOB, this is WHAT I DO ALL DAY, and just because I work in the lingerie business does not mean I should accept sexual comments. The brand I work for is fairly vanilla (i.e. not very risqué, and mostly fashion-based rather than boudoir-based), the marketing copy I write rarely, if ever, talks about sex. To say that I should expect that kind of response is like saying a woman should expect sexual advances if she shows any skin or wears a short skirt.

Sure, the comments are not personally aimed at me, because of course nobody knows who I am (for all they know, they could be "Hey baby"ing another man), but it's the sheer number of comments that is grating. If my only knowledge and experience with men was by running this facebook page, I'd be under the impression that all men are akin to rabid dogs desperately pawing at a butcher's window. And that's not how you Gentlemen want to be portrayed, is it?

Most of the comments are probably seen as "harmless fun" or "witty" jokes (the kind your male friends might say to wind you up, apart from these guys are not your friends) - and trust me, I've heard ALL the jokes. But they aren't harmless. Buying lingerie is an intensely personal thing. Women must have a degree of trust with their lingerie retailers, and to me, the retailer has the responsibility to protect their female customers' confidence. And could you imagine buying lingerie in a physical boutique while a man stands in the middle of the room making crude noises and commenting on the body of the models in the posters? Would that make you feel confident, to know that this man is probably comparing you to those models?

(You'd be surprised how many times we get comments regarding some sort of ownership of the model, and I usually respond in a similar vein.)

And really, what it boils down to, is the inability to disconnect lingerie from sex. The Lingerie Addict wrote about this in her article regarding the response to Victoria Secret's line of lingerie for young women -

"Lingerie does not always have to be about the boudoir. Yes, it’s fine if it is, but why aren’t we telling young women that you can totally buy that lacy bra and panty set just for you? No one else has to see it. You don’t have to be in a relationship. You don’t have to show it off. You can buy this beautiful lingerie and be completely, awesomely selfish about it, and wear it all by yourself. And that’s not only okay, it’s wonderful."

I couldn't say this better myself. And the way certain men react to images of women in lingerie just encourages this problem. Women see the way certain (keyword: certain. I truly believe that the majority of men do not have this mind-set) men objectify women in lingerie and assume they should only wear lingerie to please men. And even that wearing nice lingerie WITHOUT having a partner is "slutty". There have been so many occasions when I see women write "I wish I could buy this but I have no one to wear it for" and feel like screaming at the computer screen.

Another great lingerie blog, Under the Unders, tackled this subject very well in her post "(Don't) Sex it up". She also mentions that lingerie marketing is also to blame for the inability to separate sex from lingerie, and this is a very good point. I don't care if you buy my lingerie, or a competitor's, as long as you are buying it to make yourself feel good. Having a healthy relationship with lingerie will allow you to truly appreciate your own body in all its glory, and that is more important than sex (that will come along with the confidence!).

You want to wear that lacy lingerie on a day-to-day basis? Wear it. Wear what YOU want to wear. And this includes wearing plain or sports bras - not wearing lace or frills doesn't make you any less of an attractive woman (but that's a whole other rant!).

Etsy Dreaming

Oh how I could (and do) waste hours scouring etsy for hidden treasures!

Some of my favourite pieces have come from independent small brands and designers selling through Etsy.

As with any shopping website you can find some junk on there, but most of the time the products are good quality and unique. Plus there seems to be a thriving community of small lingerie designers, which is ALWAYS great.

These are my picks of Etsy's lingerie offerings!

Honey Cooler Handmade - Rox Moonshine Chemise £230.93

Way out of my budget but how adorable is this chemise!? I loved it even before I noticed the cute fox print fabric. All of Honey Cooler Handmade's items are beautiful and unlike anything I've seen before. One day maybe I'll own something from them!

MajoRey - Santa gold and tulle set £65.32

The great thing about Etsy is that I'm constantly findind new brands to love, and MajoRey is one of them. Handmade in Uruguay, this brand offers something for everyone: lace, floral, rompers, and bodysuits. Including me, the gold lover. I think I'm just going to HAVE to get the set above, and this bra, and this:

Sparklewren custom corset - £2,000

I'm not REALLY into corsets. I don't tend to wear them. Probably because I feel that if you are going to wear them, you better wear a good one. And thus, Sparklewren corsets make me cry. They are that beautiful.

Lilkitty Ko - Dark Knight Custom Bra with LED lights £56

Although I wouldn't necessarily buy this Batman one, all of this designers bras are AMAZING. Customization gone crazy, there are a few pieces that I have my eye on. At first I thought these were just altered bras, but apparently they are created from scratch!

Have you found any lingerie gems on Etsy recently?

Weekend Reading

I tend to use my personal facebook profile as a stress-ball, which often involves posting links to articles that irritate me to no avail.

And then people started telling me to "calm down", which, unless you happen to be a good friend of mine, pisses me off even further. Because you know, you SHOULD get angry about misogyny. You SHOULD get angry about body negativity. Not all of us just value going out and getting drunk, some of us like to share our rage with like-minded people.

And I also seem to post about lingerie a lot. No surprise there.

So I thought, rather than constantly update my facebook with links to article that range between "WTF" and "ARGH", perhaps I'll put them in a weekly blog post instead.

This week's light reading:

Triumph's Japanese division have created a bra inspired by a new economic planBecause nothing says sexy like economics. Oh yeah, inflate that baby. Also: Company spokeswoman Keiko Masuda was quoted in The Guardian as saying, "we hope that, as the Japanese economy grows, we can also help bust sizes to get bigger." - this sounds vaguely threatening. What is she saying? We hope that we all become richer and therefore get fatter? Get breast implants? What?

Abercrombie & Fitch surprises no one by admitting that they don't want "plus-sized" (which in this case, is over size 16) customers - And apparently people are outraged by this turn of events.

24 Hour Street Harassment Diary - This article made me go "YES" by the end of it. A good read for any woman that has ever suffered street harassment (I remember two particularly upsetting cases for myself. One was when I was 17 or 18 and wore a just-above-knee-length skirt and skin coloured tights and had about 15 comments and leering looks from men while traveling on the train - and then I cried in the middle of Liverpool Street station and phoned my then-boyfriend to come and get me. The second was when I was waiting outside the Apple store for my boyfriend to finish work. I was wearing a playsuit with skin coloured tights. 3 separate men wouldn't stop harassing me. And that's why I don't wear skin coloured tights let alone BARE LEGS).

What if Gender Roles in Advertising Were Reversed? - Most of this isn't a surprise to me (although I don't think the tame M&S advert should be included, as the issue isn't that the IMAGE is sexualised, it's that many people unfortunately only equate lingerie to sex) but I hadn't seen a handful of these that are particularly shocking. Although the reversal is funny in this case, I don't believe that reversing the stereotypes is the way to equality.

Playful Promises AW13: Russian Doll

I couldn't wait and I put all of the AW13 collection images up on the Playful Promises facebook. I HAVE NO WILLPOWER, OK? And I've been sitting on these images since November.

When I first heard that the collection would be inspired by Russian decadence, I was ridiculously excited. And then I saw it and I'm just going to have to own it all.

As I said, I shot this in late November, with two beautiful models in a gorgeous location (although it seems to have no standard UK plug sockets, which was great fun). We also shot these images on the same day, with Miss Miranda.

Onto the images. I won't post ALL of them here (for the rest check out the facebook link above), but just my favourites.

Tatiana

This is a very similar shape to the Gilda range that came in SS12, and I'm very happy about because the Gilda bra is one of my daily comfy bras. Also I have ridiculous love for the longline girdle, especially the back. This is such a smoulderingly sexy set, and will be available in September.

Anastasia

I don't usually care for floral print (in fact I mainly say I hate it) but this is different. Inspired by russian floral fabircs, this print was created in-house (most of our prints are). We've done this bra shape for a while now, but previously had issues with fit, so I am incredibly excited about the revamp.

Opulence

Which I'm also referring to (in my head) as "Sweet Jesus". I don't think I can really talk about this one without going over the top. I like it a lot.

Peacock

I know these are two photos of the same set (it also comes in a non-high waist brief) but I couldn't decide. Because the strappy-cage effect of previous bras have worked so well for us, we worked them into this push up bra set. Another amazing print of peacocks and flowers really works against the black sheer panels.

Hella Bodysuit

Bodysuits YAY. Will be pretty much wearing this every day. Also this is an awesomely strong pose.

Margarita

This is another classic PP set that we've brought back in a new colourway. Such rich colours, I'm sneakily hoping we do it again next year in the underwire version (which is currently set for SS14) ;)

Nina

I can see this as being another of my daily bras. This also comes with an ouvert brief, which I don't really fancy but sold very well for us last time!

Boohoo haul

I'm always on the lookout for good bargains and online retailer Boohoo has some very affordable pieces.

This was my second time buying from them, having found some pieces in the sale that I liked. As Boohoo is very trend-led, I only seem to shop from their Autumn/Winter collections as I just can't stomach spring pastels and florals.

As with most affordable retailers, you are getting what you pay for. You are often paying under £30 per item, which means the materials won't be particularly luxurious, details are simple and certain pieces are often unlined. This isn't an issue for me, but some people seem to only want to pay little and expect amazing quality - that's not how fashion works! I've found Boohoo's pieces sturdy enough to last me, with some unique and interesting designs.

Anyway, onto my purchases!

Hand Harness - £5

I've got a think about gold hand harnesses lately.... I haven't taken this for a spin (while djing) yet, so I'm not sure if it's comfy, but who cares!

Gold Triangle Eyelashes and Gold Zig Zag Eyelashes - £3 each

I don't typically wear eyelashes unless it's for a photoshoot, but these have GOLD ART DECO PATTERNS ON, so obviously I needed to get them.

Paisley Brocade Shorts in Wine - £8

I bought these on a whim because they were so cheap. I don't think they are dressy enough for me to wear for a club, but I am wearing them to my day job today (with a jacket from ASOS). At first I wasn't so sure about them, as they have a slightly odd puff at the front, but I love the pattern on the material. I also wish these shorts were in my size!

Harlequin

I've just discovered a piece of lingerie I ABSOLUTELY must own when it comes out in AW13.

This set by Underprotection!

I must say, I hadn't heard about them before, but I spotted their new collection featured on Lingerie Insight and LOVED this set.

I do have a penchant for gold and black harlequin pattern, having already had two outfits made in that pattern....

Swimwear: Sabine de Brumes

I am not typically a swimwear type of girl. For a few reasons. One: I'm not likely to be jetting off to a sunny beach any time soon. Two: Most swimwear I see is brightly coloured or patterned, which just isn't me.

Bring back glamorous beachwear! A good example is this shot of Asa Maynor.

I don't buy into the whole "bikini body" junk, nor feel that I NEED to go to a beach purely because that's what people should want to do. I suppose most women my age are finding that holidays are becoming rare occasions. The most I can afford to do is visit my parents in Cornwall (don't get me wrong, I love it), which hardly calls for brightly printed scraps of bikinis.

I have never seen a swimsuit and thought "I must own this AND THEN book a holiday somewhere to show it off". Until I saw Sabine de Brumes swimwear.

I actually saw the collection on The Lingerie Lesbian's blog, so head on over there for all the images. I tend to feature lingerie on my blog that breaks the boundaries between underwear and outerwear, and I'm particularly drawn to the way this swimwear can be worn as glamorous eveningwear.

See?

The designer, Mais Gysens, apparently worked alongside Alexander McQueen in London before heading to LA to launch her own collection. Unfortunately I can't find any information as to how much one of her pieces may cost, but I'd assume from the detail and the unique designs that they are probably out of my range :(

But I can lust after them.

Now that's the kind of glamorous beachwear I'd wear rain or shine.

This Month In Pictures

What I've been up to during the past month, via my instagram @swiczeniuk!

Top Left: I usually go for a black/red/gold colour scheme, but I thought I'd mix it up and make use of the silvery vintage embellishments I have to jazz up a Playful Promises bra.

Top Right: Now that I've finished reading Game of Thrones I excitedly headed to the bookshop. I ended up with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I'd not read Gatsby yet, terrible I know, but I wanted to read it before the film (which looks pretty awful) comes out.

Bottom Left: One of the outfits I wore to The Burning Beat. Wearing the new Kiss Me Deadly red Elle robe and black tap pants. TAP PANTS ARE FUN!

Bottom Right: I ended up finishing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in about a week. One of my favourite books, if not THE favourite, is Everything is Illuminated, also by Safran Foer. Extremely Loud didn't disappoint (although still cannot top Illuminated). I find his writing style so beautifully distressing, I highly recommend his books. If you don't mind crying constantly (unless you happen to have no heart). The quote pictured above is about a man who has lost the ability to speak.

Top Left: Before heading out to The Burning Beat one saturday. We look like some kind of bizarre '70s supervillains.

Top Right: The view from the stage at Torture Garden. Thankfully a fairly safe-for-work shot. Oh and the flashing light thingy, that's my new toy, a Midi Fighter. This allows us to do all kinds of fun remixing live.

Bottom Left: What I wore to TG - pretty much the same as what's in my header image!

Bottom Right: I've been sick for about half the month, ranging from a nasty cough to a full-blown cold. My desk is starting to look like a pharmacy...

Nearer The Moon Lingerie

A fairly new brand, in the scheme of things, Nearer The Moon launched in 2011 with "a devotion to all things decadent, inspired by midnight encounters, cabaret shows and high fashion." Which sounds right up my street.

As you may have guessed, I have a penchant for particularly elaborate (and therefore, mostly expensive) lingerie. I haven't actually tried Nearer The Moon yet, so I can't say what the quality is like, but I just want to pick out a few of my favourite items from them!

Spanking Shorts

I'd seen the custom white spanking shorts they created, but my heart just leapt at this gold pair. This is definitely going to be one of my next lingerie purchases. As I only really buy lingerie to wear out while DJing, I'd have to wear these with something underneath, but I think that'd still work well!

Suspender Belt with Gold Chain

Normally I prefer longline girdles that hide all sins, but I definitely see the appeal of the current trend of strappy/cage-like lingerie. Especially if it involves gold. I'm so easily swayed. I'd love to wear this over a contrasting (i.e. red) pair of high waist briefs.

Cream & Gold Glitter Playsuit

I'm not normally attracted to white lingerie but this is just gorgeous. I'm not sure if the cut out on the stomach would be flattering for me, but I'd love to use it in a layered outfit somehow. I actually saw Chloe wearing this as outerwear with a pair of Kiss Me Deadly tap pants, which looked amazing.

Do you have a favourite item from Nearer The Moon?

Lingerie Lust List

The lingerie that I'm currently drooling over!

With Love Lingerie - Courage Brass Lion's Head Garter

I'm a bit of a Game of Thrones geek, and this just screams Lannister to me!

Crystal Bra

I love blinged up bras, so I've had my eye on this for a while. If it were in gold I'd have already snapped it up, as I always wear gold and rarely wear silver. There is a black version too, which is tempting. The only issue is the website seems a bit odd. Hopefully the quality is decent!

Galstern - Moulin Rouge hand printed tights

I'm always on the lookout for interesting tights and stockings, especially gold (WHY are there no decent gold-topped fully fashioned stockings?!). I tend to prefer stockings to tights, but these are so beautiful. I also love these lace print ones.

Amoralle - Bleeding Heart Bodysuit

I don't think I've written about how much I love Amoralle (previously Sockbox). Unfortunately I don't have/can't justify spending roughly £200 on a bodysuit, but oh my god all of their designs are complete perfection. Also, their robes make me cry, in a good way.

Tips for the aspiring lingerie model

I've had quite a few people ask me for tips regarding being a lingerie model, which I thought I'd share here.

Now, some of these may initially sound harsh, and completely backwards to body positivity, however these are NOT tips for "real" (i.e. not models) women, these are tips for a job that involves being judged by your appearance CONSTANTLY. If you are looking for something to boost your confidence, the thing you are looking for is a boudoir shoot, NOT the added pressure of the fact that the images will directly effect the success of the brand's collection.

1. Be realistic about how commercial you look.

Let's back up. The majority of lingerie brands will often be investing quite a hefty sum of money (think about the location cost, the photographer cost, the retouching cost, the hair and makeup cost) into shooting their latest collections. Once the images are ready to go, these will go out to trade press, wholesale customers and, nearer the time of release, international press. Most of these lingerie brands will be surviving on their wholesale revenue, especially if they sell to the big players such as ASOS. Now, a lot of these big players (and some smaller clients) are so big because they are commercial, meaning that they appeal to the masses. They will, I assure you, only buy from a collection that has a fairly commercial lookbook. This tends to mean that if a brand uses a heavily tattooed model for the shots, the probability of the items selling is less likely. If the model has a large amount of facial piercings, this will take away from the impact the lingerie will have on the potential customer. Unfortunately, that is fact.

HOWEVER, there are lingerie brands that DO use what would be described as Alternative Models. However, most of those brands are niche or smaller, and will just not be able to achieve the kind of numbers that a mid-range commercial brand can. Also, their models are usually pin up style, and again, rarely have heavy body mods.

So you need to decide whether you have the look to target a commercial lingerie brand (if so, most of their models are from agencies, so this would be your first port of call) or a more alternative look that would work for vintage or pin-up style brands. You can tell which brand is which by looking at the type of models that they use. For example, Myla uses predominantly blonde or brunette models with long hair and no visible body modifications, whereas What Katie Did uses models that live and breath pin up/vintage lifestyle.

And for the love of god, don't email a commercial brand asking for work if you have full sleeve tattoos and bright red hair, that just shows you haven't bothered looking at the brand's ethos and ideal look.

Playful Promises AW13 - Model is Chantelle from Leni's

2. Be realistic about how your body looks

As above, you need to do your research into what the models of each category of brand physically look like. You need to know that a commercial model is usually a 34B (due to sample bras usually being made in a standard 34B), which means that she can also be a 32C. Understand that niche brands such as full bust and small bust companies will, obviously, have a different "ideal size" model.

It is NOT about having huge breasts, it's about having a toned, slim body (for commercial brands) with clear skin. Most of the commercial lingerie models I cast are either dancers or work incredibly hard to keep their bodies in check. They aren't necessarily thinner than I am, but they are toned, which can only be kept up with exercise and healthy eating (note: NOT from not eating at all. It's incredibly obvious when a model is unhealthy as her skin and hair are not in good condition).

You will be judged on how your body looks. That will be your job. I don't want to scare you away, but I fear that a lot of the models that suffer issues were probably unaware of how taxing this can be. You need to understand that, and you need to have a healthy mindset in regards to your body BEFORE you start working. Worst case scenario: Someone will tell you that you need to loose weight. Best case scenario: You will be silently judged on how tight your stomach is, how pert your bum is, how your breasts fit the bra, how angular and appealing your face is, and finally how your overall look fits the brief of what the brand are looking for. Then you will do the shoot and be told you look absolutely gorgeous constantly. Because that's exactly how I work. And you know, it's horrible to have to look at women like that. But it's not personal and it's not that, if I reject a model, I'm saying she isn't good enough, she just isn't what we need for the brand.

3. You better werk.

If you do manage to find a brand that wants to pay you (THAT is a key concept. If a brand doesn't want to pay you, then they are either taking a gamble or are taking you for a ride) to model for them, that's the easy part. You will be expected to be professional and experienced. If you aren't experienced, you should have been practicing your poses for weeks. You should know which is your best angle. You are expected to turn up on time, be preened, be poked, have no modesty (you may need to change very quickly in front of other people, although I would say it is fair to ask men to leave the room if you are uncomfortable), and then pose under hot lights for roughly 6 or so hours. You need to listen to any input you are getting from the photographer or assistants, but most of the time you will need to keep moving through poses by yourself.

Also: eyes, you need to look awake. And don't do orgasm eyes or exaggerated-lolita eyes, you are classy and strong, not a harlot or a teenage girl.

It's hard work (I should know, I'm the one that is also under hot lights, crawling around on the floor trying to get the best angle), and so you need to keep drinking water and you need to take a break to eat. We bring food for the model, but other brands may not be so thoughtful, so consider bringing something just in case.

4. How to "become" a lingerie model

I find it a bit odd when people refer to wanting to be a lingerie model, because unless you are referring to Victoria's Secret Angels (who, let's be honest, you shouldn't be aspiring to be), there aren't many models that are exclusively "lingerie models". The best you could get is to become a brand's go-to model, but with the ratio of models to brands, who only shoot 2 collections a year, there just isn't a lot of work available.

The first step to becoming a commercial lingerie model is to get on the books of a decent agency. We've used agencies such as IMM, Nevs, Leni's, Body London etc, and I guarantee that it is far easier for brands to send a list of requirements to the agencies rather than search for a model of agency standard. Nobody (who will pay you) will use modelmayhem.

However, I would suggest doing non-branded (and often unpaid) photoshoots to practice your posing and develop a good portfolio. In terms of what is a good portfolio, take a look at the portfolios of the type of model you aspire to be, note how many full length, close up and lingerie shots they have. My rule of booking a lingerie model is that if I can't see your stomach clearly in a photo, then I won't call you in for a casting.

If you do want to contact a brand directly looking for work, remember to be professional. There's nothing more insulting than poorly written emails (sometimes not even getting the brand name right!) or not bothering to include a link to your portfolio. As with all work-related communication, you need to take the time to write a polite email explaining who you are and what you'd like to offer (do not use the word "collaboration"). Preferably find an email of someone to email directly (and use their name) - NEVER tweet your request, EVER. And also, do not say you have "modeled for" a brand that you haven't directly been hired by (even if it's not the brand you are contacting. We do pay attention to what our friends and competitors do, so we do notice which models they use!). Just wearing a piece of lingerie in a photoshoot does not mean you have worked for the company.

I do apologise if all that seemed a little harsh, however I would hope that if you take the time to read my explanations for each point, you will understand the reasoning behind it. Basically, there is a huge surplus of models, and girls who think they have what it takes to be a model. It's not all glamour and fun, it's a physically demanding job.

This article over on The Lingerie Addict has a few more tips, including common sense points such as making sure you list your measurements on your portfolio (by the way "B" is not a bust measurement, we need the whole shebang).

Good luck!

Femme-Dandy Finds: Tailored Trousers

I've recently become a little obsessed with Esther Quek's style. You'd expect the fashion director of dashing menswear magazine, The Rake, to be well-versed in men's fashion. Just looking at her, you can tell she knows a thing or two about dressing dapper.

I love seeing tailored womenswear, so I thought I'd pick out a few of my favourite tailored trousers from the high street shops.

ASOS Peg Trousers in Stripe

I'm just going to say I HATE PEG TROUSERS. Unless you happen to be a 6ft model and wear heels constantly, they aren't going to look all that flattering. However, the print (you can't really see the gold stripe in this image) on these trousers really drew me in, and I couldn't help grabbing them in the sale. Wear with a sheer blouse or shirt to balance out the masculine baggyness.

New Look - Mela Navy Chain Print Trousers

This kind of print is just like marmite, love it or hate it. I keep skipping between the two, but I think if it were worn with a un-printed but well-tailored blazer, it could work in a dandy way.

Boo Hoo - Loren Harlequin Panel Trousers

Love these! The only things I would say that are offputting about them is that the pattern within the panel is not straight (perhaps that's just my OCD talking!)

Boo Hoo - Tash Chiffon Tribal Print Trousers

I've been looking for this kind of print in trousers (although I definitely wouldn't call this tribal print), and these actually look like a decent length. There's nothing I hate more than above-ankle trousers.

This Month In Pictures

What I've been up to during the past month, via my instagram @swiczeniuk!

Top Left & Top Right - I spent the past week in Cornwall visiting my parents. They live in the town opposite St. Michael's Mount (right), having moved there when they retired. I've been holidaying in Cornwall since I was very young, so it's a place that means a lot to me! Plus, as you can see, it's beautiful!

Bottom Left - I managed to grab a beautiful new fringed and embellished capelet for just £10 (down from £60)!

Bottom Right - Now that I've finished the Game of Thrones books, this is my current read. China Mieville's writing is astounding (and quite striking after reading George R. R. Martin!); I've read a number of his books. I love the bizarre worlds he creates, that are familiar enough to be chilling.

Top Left - Playing Bioshock Infinite on the 100 inch projector screen! I still haven't finished it yet :(

Top Right - Another of my recent purchases, that I absolutely LOVE. I had a bit of a google hunt for this, but I'm so glad I got it. I wore it to The Burning Beat and it drew quite a lot of attention.

Bottom Left - One of my looks for The Burning Beat. It's a bit of a mash of cultures and inspirations.

Bottom Right - After a bit too many drinks with my friend Kerry <3

Audio: David Byrne and St. Vincent

I've realized that I don't really blog much about one of the biggest loves of my life (possibly because much of my spare time is spent playing it): Music. So, from time to time, I'll recommend an album or musician. It might be something new, or it might be old (this is far more likely), it might be "mainstream" or it might be something obscure.

I was brought up listening to Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis and Prince, among others. My tastes are varied and accepting, I do not stick to genres just because I feel like I should. I have some terrible pop music in my itunes, sitting next to classic and rare gems.

This time, I'm talking about David Byrne and St. Vincent's album "Love This Giant"

Talking Heads was one of the bands I grew up hearing, that I now tend to listen more to in the Spring and Summer (weird right? I listen to a lot of Tom Waits in the winter, unsurprisingly). Their songs are always positive in sound, even though the lyrics may not have such happy connotations. Unfortunately Talking Heads ceased to be in 1991, when I was 2, but it's what lead singer David Byrne, of over-sized suit and crazy dancing fame, has been up to since (and during that time) that I also love.

In 1981, 8 years before I was born, Byrne teamed up with Brian Eno to record "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts". I only just discovered this album (via my ever-knowledgeable boyfriend) a few years ago and was surprised to read the release date. As with many ground-breaking records, it could have been a modern release. One of the first albums to use samples, "My Life..." is bizarre, created out of "found" objects, from the instruments used to the vocals sampled (one of which is the voice of an exorcist). Find time to play it. Loudly.

Between then and 2012, Byrne has done a lot of other things. Albums, talks, exhibitions, etc, but that would involve rambling a lot and I just wanted to mention "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" before getting on with the main point.

I hadn't previously heard much from St. Vincent, although she has worked with David Byrne on various projects. This collaboration was initially only going to be for a single live performance, but once brass was added to the musical line-up, they were inspired to use that sound as a base to write the rest of the music. They began in 2009, and released the album in September 2012.

What I love about the music they created is each little inspiration and mood both parties brought to the sound, and the strong brass moving throughout. The album is uplifting yet melancholic.

They released "Who" as the first single, with this music video.

David Byrne and St. Vincent are touring Northern America and Europe from June to September, so make sure you catch them! I'll be seeing them at The Roundhouse in London on August 27th.
