2 Weeks in Pictures

For more follow me on instagram - @Swiczeniuk!

Top Left - August the 3rd marked the 3 year anniversary of my relationship with my partner Mark. He took me out for a romantic date (at least, romantic to us!) - we saw Martyn Jacques from the Tiger Lillies perform the score to Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari.

Top Right - Before we went to the Soho Theatre, Mark treated me to an Afternoon Tea

Bottom Left - I'm planning a shoot with Miss Miranda and shoe-makers, Fabulously Fetish! We went up to their studio to have a chat about ideas. Shoes and cake were in abundance.

Bottom Right - Afterwards Miranda, Anthony and I found an AMAZING Thai restaurant in Upper Street.

Top Left - I went down to Cornwall for a few days to visit my parents. They live in the town just across from St. Michael's Mount, a beautiful castle that is set out to sea. This is the view from my parents' driveway.

Top Right - A proper cream tea with proper Cornish clotted cream!

Bottom Left - Another beautiful town that I love, Mousehole.

Bottom Right - The  view of my parents' glass staircase, with just some of their art.

Top Left - Unfortunately the weather wasn't great on the day that I was travelling home, which caused an hour delay to my journey. 6 hours on the train is not fun!

Top Right - Scouting out the location for the Fabulously Fetish shoot - it's in an old slaughterhouse. We went down into the pitch black basement....

Bottom Left - The Roustabouts have a new toy!

Bottom Right - I rearranged my kitchen somewhat, and put a few posters up.

Regal Rumble: Recreating monarchs for Playful Promises

Issue 7 of Playful Promises' Online Magazine is finally finished!

Featuring an article about sportswomen, a makeup tutorial, the chance to win a gorgeous corset and an interview with the Playful Promises founder and designer, I hope you will find something to take your fancy! If that's not all, check out the brand new photos I took for the mag:

Wishlist: La Lilouche

It's actually quite rare that I fall in love with a lingerie brand.

This is how it normally goes. Normally, I fall in love with the ridiculously extravagant lingerie that I definitely cannot afford (see the Made By Niki String Skirt - I don't even like pink, but I WANT that). I lust after it for a ridiculous amount of time until it disappears. Or I end up buying it in a sale and wondering what, exactly, is worth over £200, because it certainly isn't the fit.

La Lilouche, on the other hand, appeals to my need for extravagant lingerie, but won't hurt my bank account too much.

Their recent collection is full of golds, blacks and burgundy *swoon* - so I've put together a wishlist!

Mila Sequins Playsuit

It has gold, it has sequins, it has cage-effect straps. I NEED it.

Damaris Bow Tie Skirt

This just screams outerwear to me. I love the cris cross effect and the romance of the flowing skirt!

Lily Pearl Burlesque Open Fringe Bra

This one I'm a bit torn on, but I think the fact that it mainly comprises of gold fringe makes my magpie senses tingle. But does it look too much like something your cat has been chewing at?

Also I just have to say that I love the styling on this photo!

Goldie Silk Chiffon Night Gown

I LOVE the draping of the arms.

Delia Burgundy Silk High Waist Panties

Almost my entire everyday wardrobe comprises of burgundy or wine red, so it only makes sense to match my lingerie too!

I just can't decide which to go for first! Perhaps the black skirt - it's so romantic and I could easily wear this for everyday or for going out.

Inspiration: Suited and Booted

I know this may be somewhat of an unpopular opinion, what with the ladies magazines shouting SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER BEACH BODIES SUMMER, but I am looking forward to cooler weather.

Why? Well, I'm suffering. I can't really get summer fashion right, I'm sorry to say. I'm no fashion blogger, I don't have wavy blonde hair or the ability to pose like I'm constantly walking somewhere. I can't wear heels and I don't want to get my bare legs out.

I want to wear more suits. I wish I were Marlene Dietrich (obscure Vagabond Opera reference there...). But until it gets cooler again, all I can do is stare at pretty people in exquisite tailoring.

This week in pictures

I actually forgot to do this for 2 weeks, oops!

Top Left - A rare glimpse at my real hair! Thanks to Miss Miranda's secret tonic I can finally pincurl my hair, and despite the raging heat, it stayed all day!

Top Right - To jazz up a few press events, I organised the rental of a vintage snuff bar. It was so cute, and came in a little suitcase. Snuff was certainly interesting... it's a flavoured tobacco that you sniff, with all sorts of flavours from cupcake to absinthe.

Bottom Left- On a lovely sunny day I headed to Kent for a shoot with Nandi of Nitemare Photography and Stacey, a.k.a. Sample Remix. Here's a quick snap of my makeup and hair (which I did myself).

Bottom Right - I also had a friend to pose with ;)

Top Left - I had the joy of shooting the stunning Leah Debrincat for Playful Promises Online Magazine (all will be revealed very soon), wearing a headpiece by Kezia Argue

Top Right - Shot with Annette-Bette and she brought along the CUTEST dog!

Bottom Left - Miss Miranda looking mildly surprised by one of Kezia's amazing wigs.

Bottom Right - The Playful Promises team went out for some drinks, starting off at Lounge Lover, which has some amazing decor. I must get myself some anatomical drawings for my studio.

ALL the girdles!

I really like girdles.

I mean, really like girdles.

I even made Catherine from Kiss Me Deadly this, which is my reaction when I recieve her girdles.

There's something very attractive about showing one's stocking tops and suspender straps. At least, there is to me, but I imagine I probably have a 1920s mindset.

Girdles are magical things, and are such a strong representation of the emancipation of women at the beginning of the 20th century.

We all know how the Victorians loved their corsets and bustles, but there was such a drastic change in fashion in just 20 years. World War One brought about the need for women to take on roles that were not traditional to their gender (and you thought the '50s was sexist central...). Such an active lifestyle required a new undergarment, something that allowed freedom of movement.

Corsets and crinolines were abandoned, with corsets often being donated to the war effort, so desperate was the need for steel. Girdles covered the waist to the upper thighs, which opened doors for the invention of the bra. However, these were still not a world away from corsets; often featuring a metal busk and lacing (god how I love fan lacing).

Fashion has always been fickle, and by the end of the 1920s the girdle briefly fell out of favour. Flappers preferred individual garters worn above the knee; the stocking rolled over the top to ensure it all stayed put while they danced. And boy, did they dance.

Here is my dream team list of girdles (or.... items with garter straps on), in which I would also dance.

Kiss Me Deadly's Peacock Longline Girdle or... How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Teal Lingerie.

I had never really worn much teal, or similar shades, but now, I approve. I also have this in black, plum and red, so you could say I really fucking love this girdle. I could also see the Peach version working well in a flapper outfit.

Playful Promises Vamp Corselette Dress

Alright I'm probably quite biased, because I DID take this photograph. But I normally wouldn't go for something like this, because I wouldn't expect the cups to fit me. Well, I was wrong, and it fits so damn well. I think I might even customise it somehow (shiny things!) and wear it out as a dress with a kimono over the top.

What Katie Did Marlene Girdle

I don't own this... yet, so I can't comment on the fit. But it's on my wish list. I LOVE the deco design. The only thing I'm not sure about is the side hooks... It's also named after Marlene, so, that's bonus points.

Lascivious Roxy Bodysuit

This is my love/hate relationship. I bought it in a sale a few months ago, because just look at it! I love fringing, and I am even more obsessed with gold and black. I bought a small, because I am, at the most, a size 10, and according to the Lascivious fitting guide, I should be a small. Imagine my disappointment (and feeling too fat for the first time in my life) when it arrived and didn't fit me in the slightest. The main issue was the length, and given that I'm no taller than their models, this was a surprise.

I had it exchanged for a medium (don't get me wrong, their customer service was brilliant, and so quick), and while this was a slightly better fit, I still had to keep yanking it up, and had the straps so tight they dug into my shoulders. Evidently, whoever fitted the first samples was particularly short.

Unfortunately, I didn't learn, and I was enticed by the new sale and ended up buying the Roxy Highwaist Knickers. These were a whole different issue regarding fitting. Bizarrely, the boning in the sides of the knickers bends in a strange angle - as if I need more meat on the sides of my hips to fill them (I assure you, I don't need more meat for a size small). Friends of mine also had the same issue. Luckily though, these are wearable, and I have worn them under shorts with the fringing poking out the bottom.

As for the bodysuit, I'm unsure whether to sell it or hold onto it. It is so pretty, but I'm just not sure if it flatters my body type. And if it doesn't make me feel sexy, surely it isn't doing it's job?

Are you a girdle fan? What are your favourite girdles?

This week in pictures

I am a serious Instagram addict. I did, indeed, climb that band wagon.

But it's so easy for such a lazy/busy person such as myself to quickly snap the interesting little moments in life (and yes, I'm an iPhone addict too).

You can find me @swiczeniuk, but here is a run-down of my last week!

Top left: There is light at the end of the tunnel. My new macbook pro has arrived with it's fancy retina screen. It's a novelty to be able to open photoshop and chrome at the same time without whirring and clicking. My little black macbook has started weeping....

Top right: The ridiculously talented and lovely Kezia Argue made me this jaw-dropping kokoshnik. It's even more beautiful in real-life and I can't wait to shoot it!

Bottom left: After watching The Woman in Black, I was starting to regret hanging this photograph of my great, great (great?) Grandmother, The Old Bubba, up on the wall of my studio. To make matters worse it's surrounded by other photographs of long-dead Victorian children.

Bottom right: My outfit for the Torture Garden Boat Party! We DJed a bit of electro swing moving into some booty shaking mash-ups. The amazing sailor pants are by Kaori's Latex Dreams, the bra is a customised Playful Promises old style, latex sailor collar is by Eustratia and the hat is vintage.

Top left: It has come to my attention that Mark and I collect a lot of pretty tins. Most of these are from his father, who lives in Zurich.

Top right: The Roustabouts making silly faces while waiting for our cab after playing a set of electro-swing at Circus Covent Garden.

Bottom left: After a crazy 12 days editing over 60 photographs for the SS13 Playful Promises collections, we finally recieved the printed lookbooks. A mere day before they had to be taken to the Paris trade show.

Bottom right: A little bit of light reading.

The Peacock and the Moth: Vicky Butterfly

Although the rest of these images are still a work in progress, I thought I'd share some first glimpses at the shoot I did with Vicky Butterfly a few weeks ago!

One of the most creative and talented members of the cabaret world, Vicky Butterfly creates beautiful performances inspired by a huge range of delights. From Mucha to Klimt, and from Weimar Germany to the early experiments in electricity, Vicky has created acts themed around them all.

I've seen her perform a number of times due to attending the same events and each time I see more detail in her choreography, props and jaw-dropping costume (all of which she makes herself). So of course, I was really excited to shoot with her and sit down for a few drinks afterwards!

Keep your eyes peeled for more to come!

Behind the scenes at a lookbook shoot

In the past few weeks I've been a rather busy bee, and ended up with a terrible cold after overworking myself! Not only did The Roustabouts head to Amsterdam to DJ at a sumputous event, but I also shot 3 lookbooks for Playful Promises

At the end of May I shot a colourful Frida Kahlo inspired swimwear lookbook, which is possibly THE brightest thing I will ever do. Take a look at the behind the scenes instagram shots!

How gorgeous is that hair (by Ceri Cushen) and makeup (by Cheyenne Raymond)?

Last week we also shot the SS13 lingerie and clothing over two days, in a truly beautiful location...

Miss Miranda looking proper posh, innit.

Beautiful Iskra in a red dress

Tessa looking cute!

The lovely lady that owned the house also baked us heart-shaped delights each day! This cake was much appreciated on the second day, especially after an evening of cocktail drinking with Miranda (whoops!).

God Save The Queen

Forgive me for posting these with only 3 hours of the Jubilee left, but I had managed to escape London entirely this weekend, to DJ at a truly jaw-dropping event in Amsterdam (which you will no doubt hear about both on here and on the Roustabouts blog).

I did come to the Jubilee weekend prepared, as I once again teamed up with that hottie, Miss Miranda. A few weeks ago we previously did some images for the Playful Promises blog, inspired by John Willie and other 50s fetish art, and liked the outcome so much we thought it would work well for this....

The above is a work safe (facebook safe) version, the below is not, but that's what makes it that much better ;)

The styling is all by Miranda, using a What Katie Did corset and lingerie and Fabulously Fetish shoes. The crown is one of the many pieces of random junk I tend to collect!

Dandy Tux Deluxe: Lady Lucie Late

I'm surprised I hadn't posted these here before! I assure you I will slap my own hand.

With The Roustabouts due to DJ the Torture Garden Easter Ball at the Ministry of Sound, I needed something particularly awesome to wear. Which is where the stunning genius of Lady Lucie came into play!

I have a real soft spot for menswear, and androgyny in general, and Lady Lucie has a few gorgeous pieces that mash-up traditional uniforms or suits with delicious latex. Just take a look at her Military Jacket or the drool-worthy Marching Band Jacket, and of course there is her Moustache lingerie set! But what I really loved was her Tuxedo bodysuit...

It was just SCREAMING to be paired with a bowler hat, moustache and sock garters, dandy style.

I also promised I'd take some shots, which I did with the aid of Markabre Charade.

PUBLISHED: Rebelicious Magazine

A month or so ago I teamed up with one of my favourite models, Jessica Abidde (of BINTM fame) to shoot some exclusive images for Rebelicious Magazine.

The theme of the issue was pin-up, so we decided to take a 1920s approach (surprise surprise), with the help of Cheyenne Raymond on makeup! I love the super thin eyebrows of the 20's, so Cheyenne worked her magic on Jess - don't worry, she still had her natural brows by the end of it ;)

We had some gorgeous lingerie and corsets from Kiss Me Deadly, Boom! Boom! Baby! and Velda Lauder.

Make sure you have a read of Rebelicious Magazine, as it's jam packed full of goodness without the need and one of your five a day. You can read it online, and soon buy it in print - my editorial starts on page 42.

I've uploaded the tearsheets below, but you will need to read the online mag for the ability to zoom in!

And here is a bonus shot that wasn't used in the mag!

Are you looking for some exclusive images to feature in your magazine or publication? Send me over an email at aiko273@me.com and I'd be happy to discuss ideas!

Win a studio photoshoot!

Fancy winning yourself a studio photoshoot with me at the helm and fantastic makeup artist Cheyenne Raymond?

To celebrate the existance of the DJ duo I am part of, The Roustabouts, we are giving away a photoshoot worth over £300, and entering couldn't be easier!

Tweet, share on facebook or reblog on tumblr (or a combination of the three) for up to 3 chances to enter - find out how on this blog post.

Good luck!

A is for Arsenic: Black Heart

When she isn't jetting off all over the world to play in her band Angelspit, or to DJ as part of Industrial Girl Bike Gang, Amelia Arsenic also has about a billion other talents.

One of these talents includes making... things. Many things, it turns out. Jewellery, makeup, clothing, bags - all of them with unique designs and the best materials.

I have previously worked with Amelia, shooting the lookbook for her first A is for Arsenic collection, shooting images that were turned into graphics for her second collection, and now helped her shoot the lookbook for her new Black Heart jewellery collection.

Here are a few shots I took, which Amelia did some awesome editing on! I'm sure you can expect to see a few more soon.

Who is Anna Krohnistic?

Anna Krohnistic is a Ukrainian countess, a Golden Age silent starlet, a voodoo priestess, a glittering showgirl - she is the stage alter-ego of Anna Swiczeniuk.

After working hard on getting our DJ Duo, The Roustabouts, up and running I felt that I needed a punchier name that would really sum up the many guises I take on.

I'm a fan of pretentious and tongue-in-cheek pseudonyms (my partner in crime does work under the name Markabre Charade, after all) that will hopefully bring a slight smile when read!

I'll still be working on my photography under the name Anna Swiczeniuk, but DJing, performances and modelling fall under the reign of Anna Krohnistic.

Giveaway: Amore de Mori

Some of you may be familiar with Amore de Mori, if not, all will be revealed!

Amore de Mori is the brand encompassing the work of inspiring British artist Bonnie Wood. Loosely explained as taxidermy and osteological adornments, Bonnie's projects have expanded over the years, from her first collections of beautiful accessories created out of or including bones, feathers and fur to a wide range of creations.

Alongside her Amore de Mori pieces she also creates larger taxidermy work under the name of Sleep and has recently opened an online boutique, Once, which features more affordable pieces of wunderkammer. Like all of her work, each piece in the Once boutique is handmade and completely one-of-a-kind, including items created in collaboration with other illustrators and artists.

Searching on Etsy for "taxidermy accessories" gives all kinds of hideous results, mainly pieces that use wonky or over-stuffed taxidermy just for the sake of using it. Of course, there are many issues as to where the animals came from, and the ethical issues of taxidermy used as fashion. Personally, I feel that the beauty of animals shouldn't be wasted, which is why I am comfortable wearing vintage fur (much of which has been in my family for decades). There is a strong difference between Bonnie's work and many of the pieces on Etsy; the care and attention gone into her presentation transports the dead into second life, angelic and classic. The Sleep art pieces could easily stand up to the work of popular taxidermy artists such as Polly Morgan and Angela Singer.

Below are a few of the photographs I have taken either featuring Amore de Mori pieces, or in collaboration with Bonnie.

If you would love to get hold of a piece of Amore de Mori artwork, you could be in luck! Bonnie is running an amazing giveaway across her facebook and tumblr!

The giveaway consists of 3 stunning prizes, the first being Garcier and Dalia, a one of a kind taxidermy artwork. There is even a story behind these conjoined chicks, and being a wannabe carny, theres nothing I love more than stories of Louisiana hoodoo, fortune tellers and spit-and-sawdust carnival freakshows.

The second prize is the head of the dastardly villain that took Garcier's eye!

And the third prize, the preserved heart of Garcier and Dalia, presented as a gorgeous necklace in a coffin box.

HOW TO ENTER

‘like’ the Amore de Mori facebook page and share the giveaway post here

OR

Follow the Amore de Mori tumblr and reblog the giveaway post here

Each time you share/reblog either on facebook or tumblr, you gain another entry. Therefore, the more you share, the more likely you are to win!

The competition closes when the Amore de Mori Facebook page reaches 1000 likes and the Amore de Mori tumbler achieves 500 followers.

The winner of the first prize will be the person with the most entries. The winner of second prize the person with the second highest number of entries and the winner of the third the person with the third highest number of entries!

The Mourning Widow

Surprisingly, I realised I hadn't really been in front of the camera for some time, so when Charlotte (RavenBlakh Photography) contacted me regarding a new shoot, I thought it was a good time to remedy this!

I had worked with her before, so I already knew she is talented! I find that I don't often model for others mostly because I don't think many photographers have a style that works well for me. I look for photographers with a distinct voice, which will work with my styling rather than just flat images where my styling pulls the image along.

This shoot was based on the theme of mourning, which instantly made me think of Amore de Mori's beautiful Memento Mori collection. I had a few pieces still with me after shooting the product shots for them:

Check out the rest at the Once boutique. I absolutely love this collection - I find Victorian Post-mortem photography fascinating and beautiful. Considering the amount of work, detail and originality of these pieces, I think they are more than worth the price. Perfect present for those with a bit of a morbid sense of humour ;)

I also had the pleasure of borrowing a beautiful black corset and neck corset from Boom! Boom! Baby! who's work I've also shot years and years ago! Her corsets are an absolute work of art, and this one was in a beautiful thick leather. I love the shape that neck corsets create, which I think worked especially well for a slightly Victorian-esque shape.

The other parts of the outfit were pulled together from various bits and pieces from my wardrobe, including a bra from Playful Promises and a Kiss Me Deadly suspender belt. I put the wig together a few nights before, making poor Mr. Phrenology head into a drag queen.

And now, onto the results!

I'm so pleased with these images! There are even more amazing shots that you can see here!

Anatomy of a Heart: Playful Promises AW12 Lookbook

Two new products are almost ready to hit the Playful Promises boutique, which means I can show off a few more images from the AW12 Lookbook shoot!

The location was actually a studio, believe it or not! I met Sarah and Mike at a club last year, and found that we actually tend to go to the same clubs quite a lot. They not only own but live in Area 44 studio, which is full of beautiful props and antiques.

The above image features Ana from IMM in the beautiful Dominique Corset, which is available for pre-order now. The hair was done by Mutsumi and makeup by Cheyenne Raymond. Below is the Love Corset, which is also available to order now. I just found out that the vintage stitch detailing is done by hand - amazing!
